Acids: A Guide by Skin Type

Acids determine the level of your seriousness in your skin care routine. When someone tells me their favorite products based off what acids are in them, I know they mean business. I have to admit prior to upping my skin care game, I was hesitant about using acids. I wasn't about the burning sensation and the trial /error that comes with finding products that actually work for my skin type, but after experiencing the baby like glow from my first ever chemical peel I am converted. These days I'm all about a glycolic acid in order to combat my adult acne and scaring.

While it's easy to assume that all acids were created equal, knowing the difference between acids is key when targeting skin care concerns. Acids are essential in producing cell “turnover” they cause older cells to shed making way for newer cells to form beneath leading to improvement in skin texture. Different acids target different concerns; fine lines, wrinkles, acne, hyperpigmentation; so when choosing which it best for you it helps to pick one that is suited for your skin care concern. Determining the best AHAs and BHAs can be a bit overwhelming so we put together a guide based on skin types and the acids that love them!

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic is is the holy grail for exfoliation, it’s an AHA derived from plants, it's the smallest AHA so it penetrates the skin easily. AHAs work by loosening the glue-like substance that holds dead skin cells on the top layer of our skin as well as stimulating cell generation. The perks of using glycolic is improved skin texture, tone, and brighter complexion. Glycolic is favored for improving skin issues such as blackheads, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores , acne and reducing fine lines.

Mandelic Acid

Mandelic Acid works by gently exfoliating the skin, it is a huge player in anti-aging ingredients. It strengthens collagen and supports in giving skin back its youthful softness. Mandelic acid has antibacterial properties that are key in fighting acne, it has even more benefits for those who suffer from cystic acne. It has a larger molecule than glycolic so while it doesn't penetrate deeply it makes it gentler on the complexion and is less likely to cause skin irritation.

If you're looking for something to strengthen the skin and brighten mandelic is your acid.

Salicylic Acid

If you’re dealing with a bad breakout the baddest of  BHAs: salicylic acid is going to be your go to. BHAs are oil soluble ingredients can penetrate skin deeper than AHAs. Once it penetrated the skin salicylic acid dissolves debris from clogged pores making it key to getting rid of blackheads and whiteheads.

If you have acne prone skin Salicylic would be your ideal acid.
